“Gateway”
This photo taken by Dr. Michael Datko shows a low-field MRI scanner made in-house at the MGH Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging in the lab of colleague and friend Dr. Matt Rosen. This photo was a finalist in the 2024 MGH Image Awards, under the category “Science as Art”.
“Tunnel Vision”
This is a photo of the ultrahigh field 7T MRI scanner at the MGH Martinos center, taken by Dr. Michael Datko when the magnet was first being installed in August 2019, before the magnetic field was active. This photo was a finalist in the 2019 MGH Image Awards, under the category “Science as Art”.
“Napadow Lab”
This photo was taken with members of the Napadow lab in October 2020, using a long-exposure photography technique. Each lab member used the light from their cell phone to “draw” one letter each during the 5-second camera exposure.
This is Your Stomach on Pineapple Pudding
Gastric peristalsis can only be observed continuously over the whole stomach volume with our free-breathing MRI technique, without requiring breath holds and with this striped-like contraction pattern that moves food through the stomach. Pineapple pudding is used to make stomachs appear bright in images without requiring contrast agents, helping us extract clinically useful information for gastroenterology patients.
